Following on from the recent Australian Floods that devastated much as eastern Australia it seems that those living in far north Queensland are in for what is one of the largest tropical cyclones in history to touch down in the next 24 hours. The storm is expected to continue to grow and be much larger than Cyclone Larry that caused $1.5 billion in damage back in 2006 and decimated the Banana crops across Queensland. The tropical cyclone has been upgraded from a category 3 cyclone with strong wind guests of 170-225km/hour to a category 4 cyclone with strongest wind gusts of 225-280km/hour and may even reach a category 5 cyclone with deadly wind gusts of more than 280km/hour (100km/hour = 62.50 mph).
To put the event into perspective, the current size of the storm is around 1.7 million square kilometres with a width of around 500 kilometres and the eye of the storm is 100 kilometres wide. You can see from the photo below that the size of the storm is bigger than the state of Queensland it is about it hit and it may strengthen overnight. Always seek official information from sources like Queensland Disaster Management Services, including audio message updates on the current state of Cyclone Yasi.

- Babinda RSL, School Street (OPEN 7am)
At all locations you will be required to bring your own clothing, bedding, food, medicine and supplies for up to three days. Please keep in mind that space is extremely limited so please do not bring unnecessary items.

Townsville Evacuations
This data was accurate at 12:26am on Wednesday 2nd February. Townsville City Council have also set-up a Disaster information page and you can contact them on 1800 738 541, but be advised that the best place for updates is via Townsville Twitter or Facebook page.
At this time parts of Townsville will be potentially affected by a storm tide 1m above the Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT). HAT is equivalent to approximately 4.1m above sea level in Townsville. Some properties require MANDATORY evacuation. If you do need to evacuate, you will be informed in person by 9am Wednesday 2 February. If you are evacuated, you should try to find lodging with friends or family, if you have nowhere to go, the following locations are available for those who have been evacuated:
- Townsville Showgrounds, West End (report to main grandstand)
- Commonwealth Government Building, 143 Walker Street, City
- James Cook University, George Roberts Hall, Parkinson Road, Douglas (open 9am Wednesday)
